Tunneling

Conventional tunneling is a method for excavating a tunnel using either manual excavation or with the use of a tunnel boring machine (TBM). A TBM or Shield is used to support the ground during excavation and provides a place to erect tunnel support.

While we have the capability to meet all of your pipeline needs, Walter C. Smith Co. has earned an excellent reputation for creating tunnels to allow the installation of pipelines of over 10 feet in diameter. Our equipment fleet is primarily for "soft ground" conditions. However, we have systems available for installations through hard rock and other difficult subsurface conditions.

We provide the means for the installation of pipelines crossing major improvements such as freeways, canals, and railroads but are used in many circumstances where trenching is neither feasible nor cost effective.
