Horizontal Boring

Is a system of forming a horizontal bore by jacking the steel casing through the earth from a jacking pit, crossing underneath an improvement, to a reception shaft. Spoil is removed from inside the encasement by means of a rotating flight auger. An Auger Boring Machine (ABM) bores through soil or rock with a cutting head and auger to install steel casing pipe. The equipment has limited steering capability however this system used with the GBM system can provide the accuracy needed for any project.

Walter C. Smith Co. has developed the capacity through auger boring or screw conveyors to bore holes to accommodate pipe ranging from 6 inches to 72 inches in diameter. Our equipment fleet is primarily for "soft ground" conditions; however, we do have various systems for installations through hard rock and other difficult subsurface conditions.

These services are required for the installation of pipelines crossing major improvements such as streets, freeways, canals, and railroads but are used in many circumstances where trenching is neither feasible nor cost effective. Unlike the typical Construction Company, we specialize in this type of work. It is all we do. Moreover, we maintain a diversified complement of equipment and trained personnel whereby we can effectively staff and execute several concurrent projects.

Walter C. Smith Co.’s engineers can tell you if this method of installation would be best for your project. Contact us at (559) 299-9727 or e-mail us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
